This is an art quilt that I did a while ago. It was done after watching a
home burn to the ground. Some of the remnants of the home are included
in the quilt itself, as are photo images of the aftermath.

This is now being offered for sale in charity benefit Auction at MIT in
Boston. The opening bid is $200 and I really hope that it sells, so the
charities will benefit from my donation. The three charities are Troubadour, Children's Glaucoma Foundation, and Humanity in Action. to find out more about these charities, click here.

There is an on-line auction, followed by a live auction on Thursday night. You can see more (or bid!!) here: www.paddle8.com/forgood/MIT/
Also, on some of the groupings, you are able to choose to have it made in either the Panel or Asymmetrical style, and specify a sleeve length.
Three of the groupings are shown here on the left. (clicking on the caption will take you directly to my Facebook page with the picture) I am making, them for the shop, and so if I should be making them in a particular size, now is the time to mark it.

This is NO OBLIGATION to you. I will make it, post it, and let you know when it is available... then you can choose to purchase it, or leave it in the shop!
The jill2day road show is at the River Center for the American Craft Council arts and craft show. It is a very well run show and great artists around every corner! It is a very good thing I have little shopping time!

Yes, selling items is the purported purpose of attending these shows, but truth be told, that is about three on my list! the real "first" is the people! I have been lucky enough to meet a few of my Etsy customers (and fellow sellers) at shows I have done. Add to that the show customers who 'discover' me at shows and the other artisans who become my compatriots in set-up and tear-down dramas and help to pass the hours (and chocolates) during the show.

Yesterday was the first day of the show, and I met groups of mothers and daughters, sisters, and friends out for a day shopping together; Some very interesting couples who are enjoying walking through life together; and many both professional and non-professional artists and craftspeople.

Nancy rocking her new sweater!

Seth and Nancy were one of the couples who entered my booth... you know how some people have sunshine surrounding them? Well this is one of those couples! From Seth's enthusiastic smile and photo taking (and you can tell from his blog, that is his 'normal' state of mind!), to Nancy's glee at wearing her new sweater, you could tell this is a couple who are enjoying life!

I had better get going, and get to the venue to prepare for another busy and fun day... more tomorrow!
It was that a truly creative person should be able to see creativity within 10 foot around them at any given time. I really believe this. We are always surrounded by stimulus. I challenge myself with this idea often. Sometimes with my camera, sometimes drawing, sometimes craft, once in a while even by writing! Many times they are just thoughts and images in my mind. It is an especially useful exercise in transit and in waiting rooms.

The above three images are from a recent walk. I stopped and looked. The leaves, puddle, and recently sawed wood were all there. The photos were taken with my cell phone, and have not been retouched or cropped. The color was amazing to me. I am happy that I saw these within my 10 feet.

I have ordered some custom fabric with these images printed on it. (a great site to do that is Spoonflower.com) It will be the base fabric for an art quilt. I haven't done one of those in a while, and have quite a 'hankerin' to do one.
I recently ordered a vintage book from Etsy seller Anna3. I can't talk about that book, because it is a surprise for someone, but she also sent me a surprise! I don't think she had a clue what joy she was spreading with this little gem! It is 'Dressmaking Made Easy', published in 1928 and authored by Laura I. Baldt, A.M. and assistant professor of Household Arts Teachers College, Columbia University

A vintage book is a joy in its own right; that wonder of where it has been and who has held it before you have. The cover with cloth-bound texture and pages with just the right amount of mustiness to them. Then add to that my years and interest in graphic design; the type styles and the illustrations that immediately evoke a past era. And then for the subject matter to be dressmaking... well, enough said!

However the highlight for me was right here on page one. I am so grateful for my studio, and reading this made me realize what solice and import the "sewing room" brought to generations of women for whom their creativeness was merely regarded as "women's work".

I can not wait to sit and read through this book. I am sure it will have some great practical advice for me, but more importantly, it will be a reminder to me of the long line of creative and productive women who threaded many needles before me.

Here are a couple of the illustrations from the book!
As a kid, I was never a big fan of dolls. Yes I had Louise, who was a large doll given to me by my Aunt, and a doll (not quite a barbie) for which this same aunt made beautiful handmade garments. My bestie Cathy and I did sit on the front porch steps and play with these quite often, but mostly I played horse or soldier with the twin boys next door.
Since opening jill2day on Etsy I have discovered a whole new world of dolls and doll clothing made by craftswomen. Three of my Etsy buddies are purveyors of such wonderful items, and I thought I should introduce them to you!

The first is Pattie, of dressurdolly2. She makes wonderful one of a kind shoes and clothes for dolls. I am astounded at the detail she adds and the fun she has doing these.

Her clothes go to grandmas and aunts who lavish their young relatives, to collectors who take great care with their own dolls, and of course, to the young doll owners themselves. So whether you are looking for a stylish leopard coat for winter, or these great denim overalls for summertime fun, check out her shop!
Then there is my buddy, Denise, who makes Halfpenny and Pegtale dolls for her shop HeartStringsHandmade. These dolls are wonderful little morsels of creativity. With their pixie size and tiny details they are just so engaging.
She make theses dolls for every holiday and occasion (including wedding toppers) and everyone is original and one-of-a-kind. Denise has a very loyal following for her East Coast shows, and is relatively new to Etsy, but a rousing success so far.

I love this black and white doll, because it is true "everything IS more glamorous in black and white!" Next time you are looking for that special little gift, be sure to check out her shop. And while you are there, make sure to notice the great coasters she also makes!
Finally, there are the wonderful dolls from the world of LoopyBoopy. Colleen lives in the big easy, and her dolls must feel so at home in that wonderful place. These are art dolls made for the serious collector and appreciated by art galleries. They have both angst and vulnerability and will just steal your heart the moment you see them.

fun and funky patchwork

A while ago, I started making afghan blankets for jill2day. It all started with my reluctance to throw out even the smallest pieces of "left overs". I would throw small parts in a box as I made my sweaters, Then eventually cut them into squares or rectangles. One day I finally had enough so I mad myself a "blankey" to use while watching TV (My hubby tends to like the house a lot colder than I do!!
This bright patchwork one (on left) is an example of a "scrappy" quilt.Just a joyous jumble of lots of color and texture.
But, coming from a quilting background, I couldn't help but think of also making some out of intentional color schemes. These three are examples of those - loosely based on strip or log cabin quilts, with coordinated colors and textures. You can see more of these in my afghan blanket section of jill2day.
Sometimes though, I find another type of inspiration or design idea! I found an atrocious sweater one day... knit to look like a newspaper, it was a truly awful sweater, but a great piece of fabric! I am guessing it was like new because the recipient (I am sure someone got it as a gift - not for themselves!!) had never worn it! But I was thrilled to find it... I took it home cut it up and surrounded those pieces with additional black white and khaki pieces. Here is the result. A great afghan for a library room or reading chair! We have no tulips in our gardens, but evidently a squirrel or bird thought that was a mistake on our part, and planted this little red harbinger for us!!
I was driving down the road one day and saw what I first thought was a pigeon - not an unusual site amongst the barns of Wisconsin. However it just wasn't the right size or shape.

I turned the car back and went to check it out. Here was an all white pheasant in the middle of this flock of "normal" ones. As you can see by the picture (yes - I just happened to have my camera with me!!) He stands out like a sore thumb when compared to the camouflage of his flock mates.
A few months later I was visiting my son and family, and this white squirrel was in their backyard. he has a bit of a brown spot on his ear, so I do not think he was an albino - just white coloring. he was absolutely beautiful. But, living where I see hawks out cruising for food every day, I couldn't help but think what an easy target he would be.

I have never seen the pheasant again, and the kids said the squirrel has never returned to their yard. I hope they are okay, but nature is not kind to those who don't have the defenses evolution has given them, so I doubt it. But it was a thrill to see them both.

This morning I took a time travel trip back to my childhood in the 1950s!

Etsy has so many wonderful sellers, both handmade and vintage. I looked up many of my childhood memories after breakfast this AM, and here they were; preserved in the pages of Etsy!

We can start with the Captain, Bunny Rabbbit and Mr. Green Jeans... of course Miss Francis and Ding dong school was also there, as was Romper Room. But The Captain was probably even Wil Shatner's Favorite Captain! I so loved that show and can still feel the carpet under my knees as I knelt to watch everyday.

But when it came to playing, nothing was better than my imaginary horses. I had one just like this (in black though). While using it, I perfected every known horsey sound that could be made with snickering lips or stomping feet. I was so sure I could grow up to be a wild horse on the western plains if only I could learn the language!
Our copy had probably been pre-read by Joan or Jack, but that hadn't damaged it, and eventually I claimed it with my early cursive signature planted on the cover page. The idea of that tiger running in those circles was amazing to me!
I think I could list virtually every breed of dog or horse long before I knew the state capitals! These are only a few of the treasures I found. If you want to see the entire Treasury of 16 items that I collected, please click on this link to Etsy.jillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07124438632895319097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5057417628162922812.post-53845524446921127662012-03-31T08:53:00.000-05:002012-03-31T08:53:17.634-05:00Summertime Blues - and pinks, greens and yellows!

Summer is on its way, but that doesn't mean the sweaters have to be packed away!

I have just listed several new sweaters into my jill2day shop. There are long ones, short ones, cardigans, and pullovers... and are all just lovely colors (today and tomorrow I will be adding more wrap style sweaters too!!)

Some of these sweaters would be great alternatives to a sweater shirt for those casual outings (see this one shown on the left). Others would be great alternative for a jacket. This black and blue long cardigan, shown on the right, is especially wonderful for this, it is longer and would be so great to grab and go through out the summer.

I have also listed a little shrug type cardi.Note the sparkley decorative button at the collar (it hides the snap closure). Then I added some cotton knit cabled wonderfulness... one coat and one pullover! These three are so soft and the colors are just right to pair with your summer linens and cottons! They are all shown below.

Don't be afraid of sweaters for the summer. Face it, most of our time is in air conditioned offices, stores, homes, and cars... and many times those are cooler in the summer than they are in the winter! These non-wool garments are perfect for both office or casual use paired with your Capris or skirts. Enjoy!
Back to my woods again!! As I walk through the woods, I sometimes realize the futility of being an artist. It has all been done; it is all around us. While the drive is to recreate it, the need is just to see what is there. I do love art museums, but sometimes I think they are our visual "second hand stores"!

The real trick is in recognizing the beauty around us - everywhere; not having it served up to us in a silver frame! (NOTE: this is said with all due respect, awe, and love for the creations of my many artist friends... you show us what your eyes see, and I thank you for that.)

Sculptors work so hard, with every material, to create interesting forms. Nature does it everyday. She is just far more patient. Letting the wind and water and temperature do its work over seasons and years. But the line, repetition, texture, movement, balance and every other principle of art that we artist strive for, are right there in the tree stump or rock. I am so happy that during the day, I can go visit my Blue Mounds Wood 'sculpture gallery' whenever I want a little break from creating for jill2day, or just need inspiration.
If you have been around my Facebook or blog, you are probably aware of how much I like our birds. we are so lucky to have a great variety that stop by and eat at Jon's Diner!

I have really enjoyed seeing bird art by the artists on Etsy.

Here are three of my favorite Etsy bird artists:

Dean Crouser

The first is DeanCrouserArt Dean is an Oregon state artist.

This chickadee is wonderful, but his shop is just full of critters of all sizes each done with these wonderful splashes of color. Watercolor is one medium that I have never been able to master, so I have true respect for the technique used here as well as the aesthetics. Check out his shop and his animals.

Wire Animals

The second is wire animals, a Seattle Washington artist.I love this bird! Again, I am astounded by the technique as well as the fun beauty of these wired critters! If you would like to see a video of Nakisha making one of his birds watch here.

Ballet Art

And the third artist is Ballet Art an artist from Montebello, California

You have got to go check out all of his art. The dancers are fantastic, and everyone of his drawings just captures the essence of his subject.

I found this cardinal to be absolutely charming; even this cardinal from my porch loves it!

Mostly it is ignored by humankind, especially in summer when it is well protected by poison ivy, nettles, barbs of every kind, and ticks are omnipresent, but in spring I can go visit. I like it best then anyway. Free from the frills of foliage, the trees can reach with abandon! I went wandering recently and rested by a few of my favorite tree friends. I love the textures of the bark, the fuzzy green of the moss, and the polished smoothness of the now bark-less old timer.

During the day I can watch them standing guard out my studio window. At night, when our bedroom windows are open, I can here them talk. The soft squeaks as the winds sways them against each other. The occasional crack or creak as an old limb gives way. The general rustle.

I think I wouldn't mind being a tree. It would be a long and lazy life of welcoming others to nestle within your arms. You would provide shade and protection, and food for future generations. All the while feeling the sun's rays, the rain's moisture and the earth's security around your roots. And after many years, if you are lucky, you disintegrate, first into a beautiful sculptural form, then into the ground.jillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07124438632895319097noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5057417628162922812.post-34948008549247593392012-03-20T04:32:00.014-05:002012-03-20T05:47:09.173-05:00Tagline; What does it meanWhen I redid my jill2day shop recently, I also changed my tagline to:

You will never see your garment duplicated. No patterns are used, it is sculpted individually on a dress form, with unique materials. I find some pretty wonderful fabrics in my supply searches, but usually only once. So the size of a sweater or the unique attributes of it will often determine the final size or style of the garment I make... never to be seen again!

Eco-friendly
The fabrics used in this garment were sourced at charity-based resale shops. All were chosen for their uniqueness and quality, all were given new life, and all were saved from the landfills. All suppliers were chosen for their philanthropy and good works in hope of also keeping my garment socially responsible.

Occasionally, people have questioned my cutting up perfectly good garments, especially when they are in stores often thought of as providing low-cost clothing to those in need. I did a post about this when I first opened, if you have that question, click here.

Snuggley perfect.
Comfort and durability are sewn in with an industrial serger. This means the insides of the garment is smooth and unfettered by seaming, instead the seams are made decorative through the use of colored thread and appear as a design element on the outside of the garment!

My designs are all original, are designed for casual and comfortable fit on all body types. The distinct flare of the back, and the wide sleeves (on most garments) are two of the considerations for comfort. Of course the afghans are just plain comfy on their own!
During the winter it is also a snowmobile trail. It is built on old railroad tracks, so it has the tunnels and bridges of the old railroad. it is a great place to wander, wave at passers by, and watch the change of season. Soon it will be in its summer glory, but now it is still recovering from winter.

Yesterday I wandered. I got a bit hung up in the tunnel. It was sunny on the outside, but the melt was not quite finished on the inside darkness. I am struck by the patterns that this light/dark and wet/dry makes. So of course I had to photo some of them!
People often ask me where I get my color combo ideas for my upcycled, reconstructed sweaters, and I have to admit that many times they are not initially conscience choices, but the editing of them requires very conscience decision making! I think that somewhere in my head, there is a folder labeled "colors/textures seen" and my gut just goes there and pulls images like these.... then comes up with ideas like these two sweaters available on jill2day.
I will not go into detail here, but lets just sum it up by saying it involved copyright infringement, and the scamming of some very well-meaning people. It was the kind of situation that could easily have resulted in lawsuits, and anger of the worst kind. Instead, this group of artists has chosen to turn that energy into the positive support of a very deserving cause. They have started a group, Artists Lending Support, to support the research of ALS. They have a facebook page to which artists who want to make donations can link.

I have listed this sweater on their site, and I will be donating the proceeds from the sale to ALS.net. It can be purchased from my Etsy shop, and I will forward the money to them.
While the cause is deserving, it is the manner that these artists chose to respond to their situation that I have found amazing. Particularly when we are witnessing so much hatred and negativity in politics and elsewhere, to see a group respond with such kindness has been heartwarming. Again, the details are not important, or what they want to focus on, so I do not mean to be coy or mysterious, just take my word for it; The world could use a lot more of this type of attitude and delivery!
The two charities that this group supports are:

The first one is for research funding: www.als.net/

The other charity is for individual patient care: www.ccals.org/home.phpjillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07124438632895319097noreply@blogger.com0
